In 2011, the Huapango was added to the UNESCO cultural heritage list as part of Mexican mariachi music.
The Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo (1912-1958) is very popular, the work is inspired by three traditional Son Huastecas by Veracruz. The composer, Moncayo, created an unofficial Mexican national anthem with his Huapango from 1941.
