'Twists Of The Mind' is a concerto written for Two tuba's and brass band/fanfare. It's a story about 'burnout' and the fight against 'depression'. The first movement starts with the character trying to tell himself he's fine and happy, but the major themes constantly get disrupted by bad thoughts. The positive sounding melodies keep getting more and more artificial before the characters completely slips away in darkness and anger. The second movement is a fast and manic manifestation of anger and confusion or sadness. Different styles from Latin to even dubstep come to the fore. After the final outcries the tuba cadenza is the character lining up his thoughts, resulting in a Quartet for 4 tuba's. The calm choral in the end, followed by the theme from the first movements and the dying heartbeat in the bass drum make an open question: Has the person found his calmness and happiness again, or has he found his rest by taking his life?
